i spent my early morning in wellington with a delicious cup of coffee
enjoying the streets before most people ventured out.
once things began to open i headed over to the wellington cable car,
an antique that for $1 student fare takes you up to a huge hill overlooking the city.
at the top of the hill are the wellington botanical gardens.
i was slightly skeptical as to what i would find seeing as it is winter here...
but i was surely not disappointed!
i spent a full hour and a half wandering around the lush forests, beautiful flowers and gardens
before i pulled myself away in search of more wellington.
after the botanical gardens i headed back down into the city for a little shopping in cuba mall.
cuba street is home of all things eclectic, vintage, beautiful and lovely.
it was completely fabulous.
a tiny, wonderful, very hip coffee shop at the end of cuba street.
i had lunch here,
apart from my incredible quesadilla full of yummy veggies
i was totally sold on the cuban decor- bright colors, old and faded photographs, wide plank wood floors and cute waiters with dreads...
fun fact: when the lord of the rings cast was in town for filming- fidel's is where they hung out.
after poking my head into every vintage store and cool boutique i could find
i hoofed it over to the waterfront to check out the wharf
right on the water is the national museum, te papa.
oh.
my.
word.
the history major in me geeked out at the sight of six floors choc full of natural history, art exhibits and interactive science.
(maori meeting house)
(maori exploration canoe)
after te papa i remembered i still hadn't seen parliament!
so i trekked all the way back across the city to see the famous beehive.
(i will admit- i could have planned my route through the city a little better)
after my whirlwind tour of the city
i met my sweet friend louise in town for dinner.
we ate at a tiny place called sweet mother's-
a little slice of home
as it claimed new orleans inspiration for both the decorating and the menu.
i ate a prawn po boy and we split spinach and artichoke dip...
we ate under giant saints banners
and photographs of swamps.
it was lovely and exhausting and quite a perfect day.
pictures of the rest of the break to come soon!
we found out today that we have another week of break due to some pretty severe aftershocks.
our library won't be opened for the rest of the semester
because ALL ten floors of books fell over...
this bodes well for research papers.
ah.
what a strange situation.
i'll keep you updated-
hopefully some hiking next week?
that could be lovely...
it's going to be wierd to go back to school after a month.
oh my.
love you all.
so so so much.
Beautiful pictures! You must have a really nice camera? Love you and enjoy your extra week off!
